Tigers compete in Atlanta, Jefferson tourneys
The Linden-Kildare Tigers took advantage of four Daingerfield throwing errors en route to a 4-3 victory over Daingerfield on March 5. L-K had only 1 earned run in the ball game.
Stone Kelley started the game for Daingerfield, and Josh Terry pitched the final two innings. Terry suffered the loss.
Linden-Kildare had three hits on the night, one by Robby West and two by Clayton James. West scored twice for Linden-Kildare. For Daingerfield, Shawn Hooks had a double and scored a run. Terry had a hit and a RBI. Ruben Mims added a hit, and courtesy runner Ty Wilson stole three bases and scored twice.
Atlanta tournament
The Daingerfield Tigers won two of the three games they played in the Atlanta Tournament Feb. 28 through March 2. They came home with wins over McLeod and Spring Hill, and one Tiger, Josh Terry, made the All-Tournament Team.
The Liberty Eylau Leopards had to hold off a late Daingerfield rally to defeat the Tigers 5 to 4 in the first round of the Atlanta Tournament.
The Tigers left the bases loaded in the last inning and left seven runners on base in the game. Malik Higgins pitched the whole game for Daingerfield. Higgins gave up five hits and struck out eight Liberty Eylau batters. The Tigers had two throwing errors in the second inning that proved costly for them.
The leading hitters for Daingerfield were Higgins who was 2-for-3 and Hooks who had a double. Kelley, Colton Gibbs, Keaton Key and Cameron Precise each contributed one hit each for the Tigers.
Daingerfield scored 5 runs in the first inning and 4 more runs in the third on their way to a 13 to 7 victory over McLeod in the second game of the tournament.
The top three hitters for the Tigers were Terry who was 3-for-3 with a triple, 3 runs scored, 2 RBI’s and a walk, Kelley who was 3-for-3 with 1 run scored, 4 RBI’s and a walk, and Hooks, who was 3-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI. Mims, Gibbs, Key and Troy Stuard contributed one hit each for Daingerfield.
The winning pitcher for the Tigers was Mims who pitched three innings and struck out four batters. Keris Alexander came in the final two innings to get the save.
In the Tigers’ third game in the tourney, they came roaring back to score 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Spring Hill Panthers 10-9.
Kelley came up with the big hit with two outs and the bases loaded to score Gibbs with the winning run. Kelley led all hitters going 4-for-5 with a triple, double, 1 run scored and 4 RBI’s. Gibbs was 3-for-4 with 1 run scored and 2 RBI’s; Terry was 2-for-4 with a walk and a double, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI’s. Key, Precise and Stuard had a hit apiece for the Tigers.
Kelley and Terry split the pitching chores. Kelley had four strikeouts, and Terry got the win for the Tigers.
Daingerfield vs. DeKalb
Daingerfield faced DeKalb in the home opener Feb. 26.
The teams were knotted at 2 apiece after five innings, before the Bears scored 4 runs in the sixth inning to beat the Tigers 6 to 2.
Terry pitched the first five innings for Daingerfield, fanning five DeKalb batters and only gave up four hits before giving way to Alexander who came in to pitch part of the sixth inning before Kelley came in to get the final four outs for Daingerfield. Alexander was charged with the loss.
The Tigers bats could never get going against the Bears. Daingerfield only managed to get four hits. The top hitter against DeKalb was Mims who was 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored. Gibbs was 1-for-3 with a double, Shawn Hooks was 1-for-3, and Terry scored a run for the Tigers.
Jefferson Tournament
The Daingerfield Tigers competed in the Jefferson Tournament Feb. 22-23. They lost hard-fought games, two of them by only 1 point, to New Diana, Hughes Springs, Jefferson and DeKalb.
New Diana scored 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth in Game 1 to break a 5-5 tie game open to beat Daingerfield in both teams’ first game of the Jefferson Tournament. Kelley struck out six batters in the loss for the Tigers.
The leading hitters for Daingerfield, and combining for all six hits in the game were Kelley who was 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored, Terry who was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored and Mims who was 2-for-3 with 1 run scored.
In Game 2 of the tourney, Hughes Spring took advantage of nine Daingerfield walks en route to a 9 to 3 victory over the Tigers.
The Mustangs outhit the Tigers 7 to 4 in the game. The leading hitters for Daingerfield were Mims who was 1-for-3 with a double, and Kelley, who was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Terry was 1-for-3 with a RBI and Key was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Mims suffered the loss for the Tigers.
The Tigers lost the third game of the tournament to the Jefferson Bulldogs, 5-4.
Daingerfield tied the score in the top of the sixth on a Terry single, scoring Key, but Jefferson came roaring back to take the lead in the bottom half of their inning to escape with a narrow 5 to 4 win.
Kelley started the game for the Tigers, going four innings and giving up four hits and four walks while striking out seven Bulldog batters. Kelley, “The Workhorse” for the Tiger pitching staff, pitched five innings the day before against New Diana. Alexander came in the game in the fifth and sixth innings and took the loss for Daingerfield.
The Tigers seven-hit attack was led by Shawn Hooks 2-for-2 with 2 doubles, 1 RBI and a run scored; Precise 2-for-3 with 1 RBI; Mims was 1-for-3 with a triple, a RBI and 1 run scored, Terry was 1-for-3 with a RBI and Key, 1-for-3 and a run scored.
The Tigers outhit the Bulldogs 7 to 4.
Daingerfield faced Jefferson twice last weekend.
