Stewart takes the reins at Daingerfield High School

DAINGERFIELD – Daingerfield High School will have a third alumnus at the helm of one of its schools after the board voted to hire Tommy Stewart as the new high school principalStewart will replace Ryan Carroll, who tendered his resignation in June in order to take a position in Longview. The school board approved Mr. Stewart as high school principal in a special meeting held June 25th.

“I’m extremely excited to be coming back to DHS and helping improve our school system,” said Stewart. “I’ve had great support from the school board and administration, and look forward to meeting our instructional and support staff, as well as our students.”

Rock, Firecracker, Sword

Storyteller DeCee Cornish, of Fort Worth, teaches children a game called called “Rock, Firecracker, Sword,” which is similar to the popular game “Rock, Paper, Scissors.” Cornish taught the game in conjunction with one of his tall tales during the Hughes Springs Area Public Library’s “Libraries Rock” summer event.

Summer fun continues at Daingerfield State Park

Daingerfield -- Daingerfield State Park has been the place for summer fun for almost 80 years! We have a lot of fun and education programs planned for July. Starting Saturday, July 7, through Saturday, July 28, the park will host nine programs focused on family fun and learning about our natural world. The park will conduct a ranger led hike around “Little Pine Lake” which winds through the “Cathedral of the Trees.” Also during July, you will have a chance to take a paddle boarding class with a Ranger exploring the lake ( free with a paid park entrance permit), have fun making nature art scheduled for kids at heart and a lot more! To bring each fun packed Saturday to a fitting conclusion, we will host a dance with classics from our vintage jukebox from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the historic Pavilion. The first Saturday night of the month will be our Karaoke Dance.

Archery Club takes aim in Daingerfield

DAINGERFIELD – Area residents who have a love of archery or that would like to learn more about the sport now have a local establishment where they can hone their skills. Texans Archery Club has opened a new facility on Highway 259 in Daingerfield.

Senorita Margarita, a ventriloquist from Fort Worth, entertains children with the Mexican Hat Dance during a recent visit at the Hughes Springs Public library. Senorita Margarita visited the library as part of its summer programs entitled “Libraries Rock.”

David Beard, ‘The Catfish King,’ dead at 82

David Beard was a self-made man who was proud of family, friends and employees who helped him achieve his success. Originally from Hughes Springs, Beard passed away June 22 after a lengthy illness. He
was 82.

Beard walked away from high school at the age of 14 because his parents couldn’t afford to buy him shoes. From those humble beginnings, Beard made a name for himself as founder, president, and CEO of Great American Foods. Beard stayed true to the lessons his mother taught him as a child, using those early instructions on cleanliness, pride, and hard work as the basis for the success of his business.

Annual 4th of July celebration set for June 30

Hughes Springs’ annual hometown 4th of July celebration is set for Saturday, June 30 at Mustang Stadium with gates opening at 7:30 p.m. Concessions will be available with a hotdog combo special offered. Come out and enjoy a family fun event with entertainment, food, and a firework show at dark.

The Bowden/Early Experience to perform at Freedom Fest

Daingerfield State Park will host the Second Annual Freedom Fest on June 30. Events will begin that morning with the Red, White, and Blue 5k Fun Run and will continue throughout the day. Freedom Fest will offer a variety of events for visitors of all ages, including ranger-led hikes and live music.

The Bowden/Early Experience will be the first live band to take the stage at the historic pavilion during Freedom Fest. Consisting of Richard Bowden and John Early, the duo offers a unique musical experience including personal music and stories from their combined personal and musical friendships. Both members of Richard Bowden with Moon & the Starz, the two stepped out as a duo offering incredible personal and musical histories that blend everything from Bowden’s morning radio comedy hits and insider stories from the 70’s California Rock scene to Early’s touching lyrics of family and freedom that warm the heart and makes listeners stop and think.

DAINGERFIELD — Daingerfield State Park is celebrating our nation’s birthday with our 2nd Annual Freedom Fest scheduled for Saturday, June 30. It will be a fun-filled family oriented day with lots of events planned. The day will start at 7 a.m. with the Red, White and Blue 5K race. Late registration until the morning of the race.
