The Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society awarded Mr. Nelson Roach and the Couch Mountain Ranch one of their highest awards, the Excellence in Wildlife Conservation Land Stewardship Award, on Saturday in Dallas during their Annual Conference.
Mr. Harold Nix assembled Couch Mountain Ranch, Camp County, Texas, almost 20 years ago by acquiring 23 different land parcels to create an approximate 8,700 acre ranch. Mr. Nix sold the ranch to a Real Estate Investment Trust but retained 1,600 acres ofthe original assemblage. Around 2006, Mr. Nelson Roach purchased the 1,600 acres from Mr. Nix and about 5 years after, Mr. Roach bought back the rest of the assembled acreage from the Real Estate Investment Trust. With the tract back to its original size, Mr. Roach is intensively managing the ranch to get it back to its historic condition to will the property to a private foundation to be used for charitable purposes and to preserve the ecology of the land.
