Enrichment classes offer more than reading, writing, and arithmetic

By TONI WALKER

DAINGERFIELD – Students typically spend  between seven and eight hours a day in school.  While most of that time is spent as instructional  time, some schools are looking for ways to offer  more than the typical subjects for instruction.

Daingerfield Junior High School has long utilized  a “T-period”, or time that is used for extra  work time in academic areas. Under new principal  Amy Billingslea, the school has expanded  the use of the “T-period” to include enrichment  clusters.

“We utilize our T-period four times a week to  help students with their specific needs in their  academic classes,” says Billingslsea. “Fridays  are our days to spend times on their specific  enrichment cluster. We wanted to provide other  learning opportunities that could enhance  their life in the future.”

HUGHES SPRINGS – In theatre, they say “The show must go on.” That is just what the Community Theatre of East Texas did the past weekend, as they returned from a four-month hiatus to open their 2018 season. The group performed Neil Simon’s Barefoot in the Park for six shows while introducing new actors to the area.

Originally cast in August of 2017, Simon’s play was set to be seen in Hughes Springs in November, directed by Mandy Gammill. After the death of Gammill’s father in September, the group took a four month break before returning to work in January.

Beads, masks, and music greeted guests as they milled around prior to the evening’s events.

Students from the Next Level Church helped serve salads, fixings, and drinks as guests prepared for their meal. As has been the norm for past banquets, the steak and baked potato meal was once again catered by the Daingerfield Fire Department. Before and during the meal, guests were able to peruse the silent auction. A variety of items, including gift sets, antique glassware, and gift certificates were available for bidding.
