Daingerfield State Park hosts Frontier Days

By TONI WALKER

DAINGERFIELD – Daingerfield State Park was abuzz with activity during the Mother’s Day weekend, as visitors flocked to the park on May 11 and 12 for Frontier Days.

Activities began on May 11 as re-enactors set up camp in the meadow and offered school groups demonstrations and talks on the frontier way of life. These demonstrations included weaving, thread making, cooking, trapping and more. Students also had the opportunity to listen to a member of the United States Army who served as the commanding officer for the Buffalo Soldiers, which was the first paid military group made up of African American men. These regiments helped settled Texas and the West and helped fight against the Native Americans in those areas. According to Park Superintendent Steven Killian, the park had planned to have two more Buffalo Soldiers re-enactors in attendance, but they had been unable to attend due to health.

Run-off approaching in County Judge race

By TONI WALKER

DAINGERFIELD – Two candidates are making their final pushes prior to the May 22 run-off election for County Judge. Republican candidates Doug Reeder and Jimmy Gilliam are both campaigning in the run-off.

In the Republican Primary in March, Reeder and Gilliam, along with Jim Snyder, made up the Republican ballot for Morris County Judge. After the primary votes were counted, Reeder narrowly missed winning the republican nomination, finishing the evening with 47.06 percent, or 664 votes. Gilliam received 34.66 percent, or 489 votes. Since no candidate received over 50 percent of the votes, the two men learned their campaign would continue until the run-off, which was scheduled for May 22.

Buffalo Soldiers helped shape Texas and the West

By TONI WALKER

It is not often that we are given an opportunity to step back in time and see what things were like during the settlement of Texas. Thanks to a group of re-enactors and the Daingerfield State Park, visitors will have an opportunity to experience life in frontier times, as well as see the Buffalo Soldiers in action.

The term “Buffalo Soldiers” first referred to the members of the 10th Cavalry regiment of the United States Army. The term was given by Native American tribes who were a part of the Indian Wars. The 10th Cavalry Regiment was one of several African American regiments that were raised by the Union Army during the Civil War. The name “Buffalo Soldiers” soon became synonymous with all African American regiments formed in 1866.
