Hughes Springs 6U T-Ball All Stars won the district championship tournament over the weekend in Redwater. They won the championship and were undefeated in all six games that they played. These All Stars will be competing in the State 6U All Star Tournament beginning June 30. AUSTIN – Three Lady Mustangs have earned accolades for their performance in the UIL State Championship Tournament. Catcher Kennedi Northam and outfielders Pearl Perry Peyton Blythe each were selected for inclusion on the State All Tournament team by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. Northam and Blythe played their final game as a Hughes Springs Mustang on May 31, when the Lady Mustangs were defeated by Santa Gertrudis in the State Championship game.

The Northeast Texas Community College Carroll Shelby Auto Body program recently helped make a dream come true as they finished out a rare 427 Cobra kit car. John Weatherly, a member of the Shelby Cobra Association of Texas (SCAT) from the Dallas area, fell in love with Cobras when he saw one in a magazine during high school in the 1960s. Many years later, he and his wife were at a car show where he learned about kit cars and began on the road to building his very own Cobra.

“I looked at Kit Car Magazine, sent for some information, located Lone Star Classics and started buying parts. Over the next several years, I worked on the car as I had time and money and, after doing all I could, I began to look for someone to paint it,” Weatherly said.

Selections have been announced for District 14-3A softball, and it is no surprise that the selections include several members of the State Runner-Up Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs.

Hughes Springs’ senior leadoff hitter Peyton Blythe was named district Most Valuable Player. Hughes Springs utilized two pitchers during the past season in juniors Marisol Kennedy and Zoe Lanier. Both were named Co-Pitcher of the Year for the district, while the Lady Mustangs coaching staff of Tisha Thompson, Wayne Mosley, and April Breshears earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors.

Fall just short of state championship

History has been made by the Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs softball team. Although they all would have wished for the outcome to be in their favor, the team made history by advancing to the state championship game for the first time in school history. After mowing down playoff opponents Cooper (17-0), Beckville (10-0), Hooks (18-7), Pilot Point (14-2), and New Boston (11-5), the Lady Mustangs made their second trip in as many seasons to the state tournament, held in Austin each year.

In the team’s semi-final game, held May 30 at McCombs Field on the campus of the University of Texas, the Lady Mustangs drew the Grandview Lady Zebras. Grandview entered the matchup with a 40-1 record. The two teams had met previously this season during the Johnson County Clash, with Grandview taking the win, 5-2.

The Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs took their next step to returning to Austin on May 24, as they faced off against the New Boston Lady Lions on the campus of Northeast Texas Community College. The two teams had met up twice in the regular season, with Hughes Springs winning both matchups in lopsided fashion, 20-3 and 11-6. Hughes Springs Head Coach Tisha Thompson knew, however, that the playoffs are a new season entirely, and urged her players to play their game.
