Mustangs defeat New Diana, advance in playoffs

By RICK COLEGROVE

The Hughes Springs Mustangs baseball team advanced to the regional quarterfinal round of the class 3A state playoffs with two wins over New Diana this past weekend. Hughes Springs won the three games series, 2-0.

The Mustangs won the first game Friday night 3-2, thanks in large part to timely hitting and some clutch pitching. Before exiting the game early, Harrison Reagan was credited with an RBI, and Austin Bruce had an RBI as well in the win. Reagan was thrown out of the game attempting to score. The umpire at the plate deemed Reagan’s move to be a violation of running into the catcher and sent him to the showers in the second inning.

Lady Mustangs wallop Hooks, advance to Regional semis

By RICK COLEGROVE

With a record of 27-3, the Lady Mustangs have accomplished what many teams in Texas would only dream of doing. But for the girls that take the field and put it all out there, the Lady Mustangs feel like they are far from finished. With a fire that no one can extinguish, the team seems to be hitting their stride.

The Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs took on a familiar foe in Mount Pleasant at Northeast Texas Community College May 11. The Hooks Lady Hornets, a district rival, became a playoff adversary as well. Having faced these Lady Hornets twice already this season, Hughes Springs knew that they would not go quietly. However, the Lady Mustangs had little trouble, winning in a blow out, 18-7.

Mustangs defeat Mount Vernon; face New Diana in second round

By RICK COLEGROVE

With a team batting average of .395, the Hughes Springs Mustangs made quick work of the Mount Vernon Tigers in the Bi-District playoff round, winning 12-9 after jumping out to a quick three run lead in the first inning before coasting the rest of the way.

Alex Bruce was on the mound and, after a shaky first inning, was rock solid, allowing only four hits on the night while striking out nine batters. Bruce walked the leadoff batter and was able to get two ground outs, but the Tigers runner was able to score on a grounder to second base that couldn’t get the runner in time, allowing the runner to score from third. After that hiccup Bruce, was stellar and allowed the Mustang offense to work its magic.

Lady Mustangs finish district play undefeated, prepare for playoff run

By RICK COLEGROVE

The Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs finished last week 2-1, with wins against Hooks and Queen City, and finished the week with a loss against North Lamar out of Paris.

Monday’s game was a little intense with Hughes Springs holding a controlling 5 to 1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth inning. But Queen City managed to tie the game 5 to 5, sending the game into extra innings. But with the heroics of Charlie Mae Reeves playing a big part, the Lady Mustangs were able to win, 7-5, and remain undefeated in district play with one game remaining. The game against Hooks on Tuesday was a little bit less dramatic, with the Lady Mustangs winning 10-0 in six innings.

Tigers play two games, reschedule third

By TONI WALKER

The Daingerfield Tigers, after playing only one game the previous week due to weather, was set for a full slate the week of April 9-13. The Tigers made up a game against Redwater on April 9 before playing a regularly scheduled game against Pewitt the following day. The team was then scheduled to play New Boston at home on April 13, but that game was rescheduled due to more weather headed to Daingerfield.

Daingerfield’s offense was consistent across the board in a 15-5 run rule victory in the sixth inning over Paul Pewitt on April 10.
