Jackson looks to form 6-man football team in Cass County

George “Jug” Jackson is a name that is etched in Atlanta Rabbit football history.

Jackson is looking to start a 6-man football program here in Cass County which would be dubbed the “Cass County Crusaders”.

The team would adhere to UIL rules and eligible players would be home school boys/girls or high school boys/girls not playing football for a high school team, boys/girls in grades 9-12 starting in 2018, boys/girls who must be passing their classes and must be in good standing at school.

Athletes must live in Cass County to be eligible to play.

Practice days would be Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in Atlanta or Linden.

Games would be played on Saturday afternoon and all games would be on the road at Union Hill, Tyler, Marshall, Longview, Henderson, Chester or Apple Springs.

Parents would be expected to get their son’s to practice and help the team get to the games.

Tigers split double-header with Avery

By STAFF REPORTS

The Daingerfield Tigers welcomed Avery to town on March 9 for a double header. Daingerfield fell in the early game, 12-7 before winning the nightcap, 11-3.

Daingerfield lost the lead late in a 12-7 defeat to Avery on Friday. The game was tied at seven with Avery batting in the top of the eighth when the visitors took the lead.

The Tigers lost despite having 13 hits in the game.

In the first inning, Avery got their offense started when H McClanahan singled on a 1-2 count, scoring two runs.

Daingerfield evened things up at seven in the bottom of the sixth inning when Anthony Hall grounded out, scoring one run.

Lady Mustangs throw shutout over Daingerfield

The Daingerfield Lady Tigers welcomed cross town rival Hughes Springs to town on March. 9. Two Lady Mustangs pitchers combined to throw a 24-0 shutout over Daingerfield. Zoe Lanier induced a groundout from Jamie Nix to finish off the game.

The Lady Mustangs Varsity secured the victory thanks to 13 runs in the second inning. Charlie Reeves, Calli Stewart, Abbye McKinney, Kensley Echols, Marisol Kennedy, and Shelbie Fickling each drove in runs during the inning.

Hughes Springs got things started in the first inning when Kennedy drew a walk that scored one run.

Tiger baseball gets underway with 2018 season

Monday Feb 26th

Tigers give up 11 runs to fall to Jefferson

The Daingerfield Tiger varsity baseball squad faced off against the Jefferson Bulldogs on Feb. 26. After leading in the top of third inning 2-1, the Tigers gave up three and 8 runs to fall to the Jefferson, 12-2.

Tigers drop first game of double-header to Big Sandy

The Tigers’ first game on March 2 was against Big Sandy and proved to be a heartbreaker for the Tigers, as they lost the lead late in a 7-4 defeat. The Tigers were up 4-2 with Big Sandy batting in the bottom of the fourth before allowing five runs.

Lady Mustangs finish 4-2 at Johnson County Clash

The Lady Mustangs travelled to the Cleburne area March 1-3 to play in the Johnson County Clash tournament. Last year was an entertaining and competitive tournament, and this year didn’t disappoint either. This year, the tournament kicked off on Thursday with the ladies matching up against Petrolia and Pilot Point.

The Lady Mustangs started early and never let up on either squad, winning both games, 12-1 and 19-0, respectively.

Mustangs fall to Troup, end season at 23-10

The Hughes Springs Mustangs basketball team ended their season this past Friday witha loss to Troup in the area round of the playoffs, losing 43-36.

The boys, with the loss, ended the season with a 23-10 mark. The record gave Hughes Springs a second place finish in district before they won a bi-district contest the previous Tuesday against Prairieland.

Mustang softball fights off weather, opponents to open season

The Lady Mustang softball team is off to a fast start in the win column, but a slow start in the amount of games played. Mother Nature has had other plans, and rain has been cancelling games at an alarming rate.

The ladies were able to get in a couple games this past week though, winning games against North Lamar and Prairiland.

Their first game on Friday was against the Patriots and the ladies were able to make a big second inning start the rout, ultimately winning in 4 innings 11-1.

Daingerfield Tigers advance to playoffs

The Daingerfield Tigers took first place in District 14 3A, Region II by virtue of their 10-2 conference record. The team is made up of seniors Tim Serroen, Timmyon Broner, Mikal Reeves, Reggie Jeter, and Jordan Traylor.

Mustang baseball sets sights on deeper post season run

HUGHES SPRINGS -- The boys of summer have begun another campaign in Hughes Springs, and expectations have gone up another level in this small town. Gone are the days when the Mustang baseball team was the only show in town February through mid-May, or even June for that matter. The time has come for the Hughes Springs faithful to try and split their time in watching not one but two powers that tear up their respective diamond.
