Daingerfield ends season with loss in Area Championship

by TONI WALKER

ROYCE CITY – The Daingerfield Tigers traveled Royce City on Nov. 24, to compete in the Area round of the Texas UIL Playoffs. The Tigers faced off against the defending 3A, Division 2 State Champion Gunter Tigers. At the end of the game, Gunter had extended the unbeaten streak to 28 games with a 38-3 win over Daingerfield.

The early afternoon game featured two offenses well capable of scoring forty to fifty points in a game, and defenses known for keeping opponents out of the end zone. Fumbles and missed opportunities, however, seemed the theme of the day for both teams in the first quarter.

The Daingerfield threatened in the first, but turned the ball over on the own six yard line. Daingerfield’s senior kicker, Jose Bello, broke the scoreless tie in the second quarter with a 35 yard field goal. That would be the only time Daingerfield would light the scoreboard, as Gunter put up 38 unanswered points to end Daingerfield’s season.
