HUGHES SPRINGS -- That’s why they play the game. That’s the way the ball bounces. They left it all out on the field.

The sport clichés are out there and most have heard them all. But to spare you anymore clichés, this is the last one for this article. The Mustangs only lost that game on the scoreboard.

Truth be told, that is not necessarily a cliché, because it is true. Stats do not lie; more so they paint a picture.

The Mustangs were on the losing end of the final score, 42-22, but with 6 turnovers on the night, Mustang faithful can’t help but wonder how different the outcome would have been without even two or three of those turnovers.

The game began with much promise and hope. Senior Zack Pilgrim snagged an interception and returned it deep into Jefferson Bulldog territory, and the Hughes Springs squad was in business. This gave hope of a quick score on a Jefferson team that was blowing out opponents as of late.

WHITE OAK -- Friday the 13th came and went. The Mustangs undefeated season is gone, just like Michael Myers and his hockey mask.

The Hughes Springs Mustangs entered the first week in district with an undefeated record and were riding high with confidence coming into the matchup with the White Oak Roughnecks. All that changed on a humid and still October night.

DAINGERFIELD – On a warm October evening, Daingerfield welcomed the DeKalb Bears to town. Friday the 13 proved lucky for the home team, as the Tigers improved to 2-0 in district with a 51-21 win over the Bears.

After winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half, the Tiger defense stopped the Bears on three plays. Less than two minutes later, the Tigers lit up the scoreboard after a 21-yard touchdown run by Trodarius Lynn. Another defensive stop gave the Tigers an opportunity to widen the gap, which they did on a 17-yard touchdown run by freshman Zaylon Jeter. That score gave the Tigers a 16-0 advantage at the end of the first quarter of play.

DeKalb – The Daingerfield Lady Tigers traveled to DeKalb on Sept. 26. The freshmen and junior varsity teams lost in straight sets. The varsity squad, however, took their match to five sets before falling by two points in the final set.

The freshmen girls lost 25-18, 25-18. In the loss for Daingerfield, Kyasia Williams had nine service points, two aces, and two kills.

OMAHA – More than simply district rivals, the Daingerfield Tigers and Pewitt Brahmas are also inter-county rivals, as well. So when the two met on the football field, it seemed only fitting to dub the game the “Morris County Championship.” The game also served as the Tigers’ first district action for 2017 following their bye-week and a rough pre-district schedule that left them with a 1-3 record.

On what served as the “Pink-Out” night where Brahma fans came decked out in pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the two teams took the field for the coin toss, which the home town Brahmas won, then elected to defer until the second half. That was basically the only win on the night for the Brahmas, as they quickly fell behind a rested Daingerfield team who never let up.

HUGHES SPRINGS -- What began with celebration of the Class of 2018 ended with the Hughes Springs Mustangs with 4-0 record on the season. The Mustangs capped off Senior Night with a 39-16 shellacking of the Hooks Hornets.

In a game that never really was that close, the Mustangs scored first the first 16 points of the game in the second quarter. With a minute and half left in the quarter, the Hornets made a dent in the deficit, but the Mustangs would hold on for a halftime lead of 16-8.

The teams swapped scores in the third quarter, with the Mustangs maintaining a 24-16 cushion over Hooks. Hughes Springs would score two more times in the fourth to give the final margin of 39-16.

Offensively, quarterback Andrew Gaul was one for three passing, with Chandler King with the reception for five yards.

DAINGERFIELD – The Daingerfield Tigers rounded out their non-district schedule on Sept. 22, welcoming White Oak to Mickey Mayne Tiger Stadium. After jumping out by 14 at halftime, the Tigers ended up dropping a heartbreaker, 29-28, to the visiting Roughnecks.

The Tigers won the coin toss and elected to defer. After Bello’s 60 yard kickoff was returned for 22 yards by White Oak, the Tigers’ defense continued where they left off the previous week, notching a seven yard sack by DK Lewis before Jakauri Wood picked off a White Oak pass for the first turnover of the game. The offense was unable to capitalize, going four and out on their first series. Quarterback Reggie Jeter punted the ball back to White Oak, dropping them at their own 17 yard line.

OMAHA -- With two games already in the books for the Hughes Springs Mustang football team, the squad took to the road and squared off against the Paul Pewitt Brahmas. The Mustangs delivered a knockout punch in the third quarter, and then it was literally “lights out” following a fourth quarter defensive stop with Hughes Springs holding on for a 22-12 win. With the win, Hughes Springs improves to 3-0 on the season.

Pewitt has had a run based offense in the past. A few years ago the Brahmas converted to more of a pass-oriented offense. This past Friday, the Mustangs made sure there was no running to be had, holding the home team to negative five yards rushing on the night. The Brahmas were able to find soft spots in the secondary at times, and that led to two touchdowns and making the game and score closer than it actually was.
