Bittersweet! Lady Mustangs fall 3-2 in 3A state semifinals

It was the first time for
both teams to reach the state
tournament and the second
meeting between the two
schools this season. Little
River Academy won, 12-3,
on March 3.
Little River Academy
started off the game with
four consecutive hits. Destini
Hulsey’s RBI scored
Kennedy Jimenez, then
Lenzi Stewart drilled a two-run
single to bring home Avery
McDaniels and Hulsey.
Being down 3-0 in the
top of the first was not a
concern for Hughes Springs
head coach Trisha Thompson.

Hughes Springs teams are state-ranked

 

 

Three teams in District 14-3A are ranked in the Top 25 of the Texas Girls Coaches Association softball poll released April 3.

Hook is ranked No. 3, while Hughes Springs is No. 7 and New Boston is No. 22.

In the TxHighSchoolBaseball.com state rankings, Hughes Springs is No. 13 in Class 3A, as of April 3.

Mustangs ranked No. 12

Texas High School Baseball released their ranking for March 6 and the Hughes Springs Mustangs (6-0) are ranked No. 12. Lago Vista is No. 1 (9-1), followed by Clyde (10-0) and Troy (7-1). Gunter is No. 4, followed by West, Central Heights, Farmersville, Bishop, Hallettsville and Wall.

Mustangs win first 3 games at Elysian Fields Tournament

ELYSIAN FIELDS – The Hughes Springs Mustangs won their first three games in the Elysian Fields Tournament on March 2-4.

They didn’t allow a run in the three games.

They opened up with a 4-0 shutout of the host team on March 2, the blasted Linden- Kildare, 12-0, the following day.

Later on Friday, they bombed the Pine Tree junior varsity, 15-0.

Against Elysian Fields, Riley McKinney and Brady McEntire combined for the shutout. McKinney pitched three innings, allowed four hits and fanned two batters. McEntire came in for four innings and recorded the win. He fanned five and gave up four hits.

At the plate, Harrison Reagan led HS with three hits and two RBIs.

Against Linden-Kildare, Alex Bruce led HS with two hits, while Shawn Pope had one hit and a pair of RBIs. Garrett Golden also had two RBIs for the Mustangs.

Bruce picked up the win with a one-hitter. He struck out seven batters and walked two.

Lady Tigers finish tournament with 1-5 record

LONGVIEW -- The Daingerfield Lady Tigers competed in the Texas Two- Step softball tournament this weekend at Lear Park, where they finished with a 1-5 mark.

The Tigers fell to Prairieland, 20-2, in their final game on March 4. Courtney Makepeace had a single and Camryn Byrd knocked a home run to go along with her single. Byrd also scored two runs, and had one RBI. Destiny Hurndon had an RBIdouble, while Baylee Welch and Makayla Robinson each hit a single.

Makepeace took the loss for Daingerfield, giving up nine runs, seven walks and four hits while fanning one batter in less than one inning of work. Robinson took over with two outs and gave up 11 runs on 10 hits and struck out two.

HS girls go 5-1 at Johnson County Clash

CLEBURNE – The Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs finished the Johnson County Clash softball tournament with a 5-1 mark.

The tournament was held March 2-4.

The Lady Mustangs closed out the tournament with a close 2-1 win over Krum on March 4. They scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kennidi Northam scored on a Krum error.

After Krum jumped to a 1-0 lead, Peyton Blythe scored on a wild pitch to deadlock the score in the fourth.

Marisol Kennedy, Haylee Wilson, Northam and Blythe each record a hit for Hughes Springs.

In the circle, Zoe Lanier picked up the win. She allowed four hits and fanned three batters in seven innings.

Earlier Saturday, HS got a 6-1 win over Reicher Catholic.

After four and a half scoreless innings, the Lady Mustangs exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth.

HS finished with 11 hits.

Tigers fall in regional quarterfinals

MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Daingerfield Tiger lost a bid to reach the Class 3A Region 2 semifinals after they fell to Chapel Hill, 59-41, in regional quarterfinal action on Feb. 28 at the Willie Williams Gymnasium.

Zachary Shipp and Austin Padron led Chapel Hill with 10 points each.

The Red Devils jumped out to a 12-6 early, but Daingerfield bounce back to take their only lead of the game, 17-16, with 4:11 left in the second period. Chapel Hill closed out the period with a 7-3 run for a 23-20 halftime margin.

The Red Devils outscored the Tigers, 17-10, in the third for a 40-30 advantage. They continued to increase their margin with a 19-11 run in the final stanza.

The Tigers were paced by Kieston Rushing and Reggie Jeter with 13 markers each. Timmyon Broner finished with eight, Mikal Reeves four, Tim Broner two and Jahmai Johnson one points.

It was the final game for three seniors – Keith Bryson, Rushing and Johnson.

Tigers to take on Paris Chisum Mustangs

DAINGERFIELD--The Daingerfield Tigers boys basketball team will travel to Rivercrest on Monday, Feb. 20, to take on the Paris Chisum Mustangs in the Bi-district playoff round.

Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. The Tigers are set to be the visiting team.

Avinger faces Slidell in area round of girls hoop playoffs

MOUNT VERNON – The Avinger Lady Indians defeated Fannidel, 54-44, on Feb. 14 in bi-district action in the Class 1A playoffs.

Avinger advanced to the Region 3 area round and will face the Slidell Lady Greyhounds at Celeste for a 7 p.m. tipoff on Friday, Feb. 17.

Girls Basketball Report

The Lady Tigers
battled the Redwater Lady Dragons, coming
within seconds of notching their first district
win on Feb. 3.
Daignerfield ultimately fell to the Lady
Dragons, 37-35.
Montrevia Durham notched a double
double, scoring 18 points to go with 10 rebounds.
Durham also added four steals in the
loss. Kiara Robinson had eight points for the
Lady Tigers, along with four rebounds and
two steals.
Jasmine Tatum had six points and three
rebounds; Mo Sok scored two points, while
Makayla Robinson added one.
Kahleyia Johnson grabbed 10 rebounds,
three steals, and two assists, while Dee Hall
had eight rebounds and six assists in the loss.
The Lady Tigers finished up the regular
season at Paul Pewitt on Tuesday.
