HS girls go 5-1 at Johnson County Clash

CLEBURNE – The Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs finished the Johnson County Clash softball tournament with a 5-1 mark.

The tournament was held March 2-4.

The Lady Mustangs closed out the tournament with a close 2-1 win over Krum on March 4. They scored the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kennidi Northam scored on a Krum error.

After Krum jumped to a 1-0 lead, Peyton Blythe scored on a wild pitch to deadlock the score in the fourth.

Marisol Kennedy, Haylee Wilson, Northam and Blythe each record a hit for Hughes Springs.

In the circle, Zoe Lanier picked up the win. She allowed four hits and fanned three batters in seven innings.

Earlier Saturday, HS got a 6-1 win over Reicher Catholic.

After four and a half scoreless innings, the Lady Mustangs exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth.

HS finished with 11 hits.

Shelbie Fickling and Blythe led with two hits each, while Haylee Wilson had hit and two RBIs.

Northam, Kennedy, Kensley Echols, Abbye McKinney, Charlie Reeves and Katelyn Roth each had a hit.

Kennedy earned the win with four strikeouts and allowing five hits.

The Lady Mustangs’ lone loss in the tournament was their final game on Friday when they lost, 12-3, to Little River Academy.

HS got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the second, but Little River answered with four. They added one in the third and fifth and scored three each in the fourth and sixth to seal the win.

The Lady Mustangs finished with nine hits with Echols and Reeves with two each. Reeves drove in two runs in the second.

Blythe, Northam, Kennedy, McKinney and Roth each had a hit.

Lanier took the loss in the circle. She allowed eight hits, walked three and had one strikeout.

In the early game of Friday, HS edged Brock, 18-17, in an extra-innings shootout. Both teams combined for 37 hits.

The Lady Mustangs had a 16-9 lead going into the top of the seventh. Brock exploded with seven runs to knot the score, 16-16.

Brock took a 17-16 lead in the 10th, but HS scored two runs in the bottom of the inning for the win.

Northam scored on a Fickling single to tie the score at 17, then Fickling raced home on a McKinney single to center field.

The Lady Mustangs recorded 25 hits as Reeves (three RBIs) and Blythe (two RBIs) led HS with four hits each. Northam (three RBIs), Fickling (two RBIs), Echols (two RBIs) and McKinney (RBI) each had three hits. Wilson (two RBIs) and Kennedy (RBI) added two hits each.

Kennedy managed to get the win in the circle. She pitched 10 innings, fanned seven and walked six.

In Thursday play, the Lady Mustangs whipped Bowie, 12-1, and Cleburne, 17-0.

Against Bowie, Northam (three RBIs) and Blythe had three hits each, while seven other players had a hit each. Fickling drove in a pair of runs for HS.

Lanier recorded the win with a five-hitter in five innings on work. She fanned one and walked one.

In the shutout over Cleburne, Kennedy allowed one hit in three innings in the circle for the win. She struck out four and didn’t allow a walk.

At the plate, Kennedy had two hits and six RBIs, while Reeves (two RBIs) Wilson (RBI), McKinney and Echols (RBI) also had two hits apiece.

Hughes Springs blank DeKalb DEKALB – Haylee Wilson had three hits – including a home run -- as the Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs blanked DeKalb, 11-0, on March 1.

Wilson drilled a three-run blast in the first inning and finished with four RBIs.

The Lady Mustangs scored five runs in the first inning and added four in the third. They finished with 11 hits.

Peyton Blythe had two hits and a pair of RBIs, while Echols also drove in two runs. Charlie Reeves had a RBI.

In the circle, Zoe Lanier recorded six strikeouts and walked one while allowing just two hits.
