AUSTIN – Little River
Academy jumped out to
a 3-0 lead in the top of the
first inning as the Hughes
Springs Lady Mustangs fell
3-2 in a thrilling UIL Class
3A state tournament semifinal
game May 31 at the Red
and Charline McCombs
Field on the University of
Texas campus.
It was the first time for
both teams to reach the state
tournament and the second
meeting between the two
schools this season. Little
River Academy won, 12-3,
on March 3.
Little River Academy
started off the game with
four consecutive hits. Destini
Hulsey’s RBI scored
Kennedy Jimenez, then
Lenzi Stewart drilled a two-run
single to bring home Avery
McDaniels and Hulsey.
Being down 3-0 in the
top of the first was not a
concern for Hughes Springs
head coach Trisha Thompson.
