Golfers compete in DCC Invitational

DAINGERFIELD – Daingerfield Country Club recently hosted the Daingerfield Country Club Invitational, July 11-13. Sixty-seven golfers from around East Texas, including Pittsburg, Mount Pleasant, Daingerfield, Linden, Atlanta, Daingerfield, and Longview, competed in the three day event.

Friday evening, a special event was held for participating golfers. Tee times for the actual tournament began at 8 a.m. July 12. Due to rain, Sunday’s schedule was rained out and the tournament finished up on Monday, July 14.

East Texas Smoke earns Championships

LONGVIEW – East Texas Smoke, a local 10U girl’s travel softball team, recently earned championships in two different tournaments. The team is made up of girls from Hughes Springs, Daingerfield, Ore City and the surrounding area.

East Texas Smoke is coached by Scotty Stanley, Dusty Stovall, and Rickey Jones. Players include Hope Miles, Paris Simpson, Sierra Channel, Ashley Davis, Miley Stovall, Chrishlyn “Cat” Boyd, Addison Mercee, Shaylee Stanley, Jacee Smith, Annabelle Green, Randi Crawford, and Casey Jones.

Ties to National Football League run deep in Daingerfield

Hughes Springs’ Blythe earns MVP award

HUGHES SPRINGS – Hughes Springs senior softball player Peyton Blythe has added another superlative to her already impressive list of awards after being named the Texarkana Gazette’s All-Area Most Valuable Player. Blythe earned the recognition due to her contributions to the Mustang’s march to Austin in June.

In an article printed by the Gazette, Coach Tisha Thompson praised Blythe’s contributions.

Local team brings home National Championship

LONGVIEW -- East Texas softball represented itself well as American Freedom – Pride, based out of Omaha, competed in the United States Specialty Sports Association National Championship 12 and under tournament July 27-30 at Lear Park in Longview.

The tournament kicked off on July 27 evening with Opening Ceremonies in which the girls participated in the parade of teams as well as a gift and pin exchange with other players.

Former Tiger named to CFA’s Starting Lineup

COMMERCE – Former Daingerfield Tiger Shawn Hooks has been named to the College Football America 2017 Yearbook’s Starting Lineup. The honor is the College Football Association’s version of an All-American team.

According to the A&M-Commerce website, Hooks was one of the top return men in Division II as a junior in 2016. Hooks was also the only [layer in the division to notch three punt returns for touchdowns.

Johnston chosen as Track All Star

By TONI WALKER

DAINGERFIELD – Two-time state meet qualifier Layla Johnston has been honored by the Texas Girls Coaches Association as a track All-Star for 2017. Johnston is one of only 14 girls chosen as All-Stars.

Johnston, a senior, is a two-time state qualifier for the Lady Tigers Track team. She was also a part of the 2016 State Champion 4X100 meter relay team.

Johnston is also on the cheer squad at Daingerfield High School.

Big bass caught at Lone Star Lake

Fifteen-year-old Carter Pace, of Henderson, caught this 17-inch long bass July 22 at the Lone Star City Park. Pace released the bass back into Lone Star Lake. He was visiting his relatives, Wayne and Mary Corley.
