Mustangs fall to Zebras in 3A Division 1 Area playoff

By RICK COLEGROVE

MESQUITE -- The end of the Mustangs football season came to rather abrupt halt Friday afternoon in Mesquite. Facing a Grandview team that seemingly had an answer for everything Hughes Springs threw at them, it was a long afternoon and drive home for the Mustang faithful and Mustang players.

Grandview jumped on the Mustangs quick, fast and in a hurry. Before anyone could really settle into their seats, it was 28-0 Zebras even before the first quarter was over.

Ultimately, the Grandview Zebras bested Hughes Springs 49-6, and advanced to the regional semi-final game against a Whitesboro team that defeated the Jefferson Bulldogs, 63-39.

Hughes Springs stings defending champ Mineola, face Grandview

By RICK COLEGROVE

HALLSVILLE -- Hughes Springs defeated the defending state champion Mineola Yellowjackets Nov. 17 in Hallsville, in a bi-district match-up.

The Mustangs used a stellar and team-centric defensive effort to keep the Yellowjackets grounded all game and ultimately shut out Mineola 27-0.

The game was a scoreless after one quarter, but saw Hughes Springs finally get on the board with a run by Bryce Johnston to make it 6-0. Ja’Kobie Craver and Tradarian Craver each had a touchdown run, as did QB Andrew Gaul. All in all, the offense complied 343 yards on the ground. Tra Craver led all rushers with 151 yards, and Johnston chipped in 89 yards.

Tigers rip Lone Oak, earn matchup with defending champ Gunter

By TONI WALKER

GLADEWATER – The Daingerfield Tigers took on the Lone Oak Buffaloes on Nov. 17 in a UIL, 3A, Division 2 Bi-District matchup at Jack Murphy Stadium in Gladewater. The Tigers came out on top, 41-17, to set up  a matchup with defending 3A Division State Champion Gunter on Nov. 24.

In what has been a recurring theme throughout the season, Coach Mike Waldie’s Tigers won the toss, but kickedoff after deferring to the second half. On the Tigers’ first defensive drive of the game, Daingerfield forced a punt, but then fumbled to give Lone Oak new life at Daingerfield’s 20 yard line. The defense showed its backbone, however, forcing the Buffaloes to kick a field goal from the 16 yard line.

Tigers nipped by Eagles, 24-21

By TONI WALKER

DIANA – In a game with playoff seeding implications, Daingerfield’s stingy defense headed to Diana to face a high-powered New Diana. At the end of a relatively low-scoring between two teams who consistently put up 40 or more points in a game, the Eagles ended up on top, 24-21.

In a game that many expected to be filled with an offensive fireworks show, both teams came out rather flat, with Diana punting four plays after the opening kickoff and Daingerfield missing a field goal to end their first drive. After Diana again punted, Daingerfield finally seemed to show some life. After a 10 yard run by Daingerfield’s Chris Castleberry and an eight yard run by Zaylon Jeter, quarterback Jakauri Woods hooked up with Castleberry on a 25 yard reception before Woods was able to run the ball in from the 19 yard line to put the Tigers ahead, 7-0, at the end of the first quarter.

Daingerfield swats Hornets, moves to 3-0 in district play

By TONI WALKER

HOOKS – Daingerfield continues rolling in district play, as the Tigers defeated the Hooks Hornets on Oct. 20 to improve to 3-0 in district and 4-3 on the season.

For the second week in a row, the Daingerfield Tiger defense has shut out the opposition in the second half to pull away from Hooks and DeKalb. Meanwhile, the offense has scored 92 points over those last two games. Over three district games, the Tigers have outscored their opponents 147-40.

In typical Tiger fashion, Daingerfield won the toss and deferred to the second half. The Hornets opening drive stalled after gaining only six yards, and Daingerfield’s offense was quickly on the field. Neither team seemed too interested in lighting up the scoreboard, as the Tigers first drive also stalled out, followed by another Hooks punt.
