Mustangs look to rebound after disappointing 2016 season
By Rick Colegrove
HUGHES SPRINGS -- It’s time to put away the swim suits,
time to put away the baseball cleats, because it’s time for
football.
To be exact, it’s time for some Mustang football.
The Hughes Springs Mustangs will kick off practices next
week in preparation for the 2017-2018 football season. Being
led by Coach Chris Edwards for the twentieth season,
these Mustangs are attempting to right a ship that went
into uncharted territory last year.
Last year saw the Mustangs miss out on the playoffs for
the first time in eight years. But it is a new year and a new
attitude seems to permeate from the walls of the weight
room and the field house. With the Mustangs having a
total of 10 seniors on the field this year, Coach Edwards
will lean on those seniors to provide the type of attitude
that will propel them back into the playoffs, a place lots of
Hughes Springs residents have come accustomed to.
The Mustangs have, as of press time, 3 young men who
have been offered scholarships to play football at the next
level.
It is a testament to the way Coach Edwards has run his
program for the 20 years he has been there. The consistency
he and his staff have shown these young men prove they
are doing it right. Firm and fair, and putting these young
men in the best position possible to succeed is their calling
card.
There will be some new faces on the coaching staff and
on the field for the Mustangs.
