Born in Ben Wheeler, on Aug. 2, 1927, Olive Jo West Edwards died peacefully on April 21, at 11 p.m. at Mystic Park Healthcare Center in San Antonio. She is preceded in death by her parents, Horace Elton and Julia Bernice Austin West; her beloved husband, Francis Brooks Edwards; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Quania Mildred West Dykes and Winston Dykes, and Minnie Ruth West McBroom and Reece McBroom; one brother and sister-in-law, Jack Elton West and Betty West; and three nephews, Jackie Ray West and infant twins David and Douglas West.
She is survived by her two children and their spouses, Vanda Edwards-Jones and Jack Jones of San Antonio; and Greg and Angie Edwards of Baton Rouge; two grandsons and their families: Spencer and Jennifer Edwards and Maxwell Edwards of The Woodlands, and Warren and Paige Edwards and Hutson Edwards of Humble. She is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-law Charles and Juanita West of Richardson and Jerry and Evelyn Jo West of Athens; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn West of Athens; plus numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.
After graduating from Brownsboro High School in 1944, she attended Tyler Commercial College with the sure knowledge that taking dictation and typing correspondence were preferable to chopping cotton and pulling tomatoes. Her career as a secretary led her to Southwestern Bell, Shell Oil Co., Texas City Refining Co., and the Galveston District of the US Army Corps of Engineers.
During her adult married life, she was an active member of Baptist churches in LaMarque, Texas City, and Daingerfiel and Baton Rouge, LA. She taught adult Sunday school and served as church clerk for many years. She was also an active member of the Sand Dollar Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) in Galveston, including a term as President.
Services were held at Eubank Funeral Home in Canton, April 27. Burial was immediately following in the adjacent Haven of Memories cemetery. Funeral and graveside services will be conducted by Dr. Eric Holleyman, Baylor University Department of Religion.
Participating in the service will be her nieces Patsy Ann Dykes Everett, Cathy Ann West Coleman, Terri Lynn McBroom Rios, and Laurie West Rayburn. Pallbearers, attending and honorary, will be her nephews: Kenneth (Tut) Dykes, Kelly Dykes, Jimmy Dykes, Donnie McBroom, Robbie West, Mitch West, Jeff West, and Todd West; and great-nephews, Brian McBroom, Steven Rios, and Chase West.
