Nadine Lyon, 92, of Hughes Springs never had any children, but she had become the matriarch of her church and in some ways, of her beloved Hughes Springs.
Her life came to an end July 25 at a Longview hospital, after a short illness.
She was born Sept. 5, 1920, in Wellington, to Green and Eula Cockrill Parsons and the family moved to Hughes Springs in 1938. Soon afterward, she and her husband, the late John Lyon, established and operated Lyon’s Café in Hughes Springs. Except for Mr. Lyon’s three-year service in World War II, the Lyons ran their café continuously until John’s death in 1977. The couple also provided meals for Steed Hospital, also in Hughes Springs.
Mrs. Lyon’s contributions to her community included actively serving decades on the Hughes Springs Cemetery board, where among other things she facilitated planting of many beautiful crepe myrtles throughout. She was a charter member and former president of Red Radiance Garden Club.
Even in her nineties, she was known to be the local go-to lady for raising funds for worthwhile civic , church and various other charitable projects. Until her death she oversaw the St. Stephen’s Fund for her church, which existed to help the needy. Also this proud lady never resigned as president of her Sunday School class after decades in that capacity. She ran a tight ship in all her endeavors, while keeping her home immaculate till the end.
She is survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services will be at 2 p.m., Monday at First United Methodist Church in Hughes Springs, with Pastor Heidi Cain officiating. Burial will follow at Hughes Springs Cemetery.
