The Buzz: Volunteers are needed
School will soon begin and there will be many children out on our streets this time of year. Be mindful when you drive and take extra precautions to keep all those little ones safe.
This is also the time when schools are gearing up for another nine months of teaching our children reading, writing, and arithmetic, among other projects such as science, agriculture, and sports. A teacher’s hands are full with getting the message across to the students.
Can you help? Every year in our schools volunteers are needed. Do you have an hour or two a day or just an hour a week that you can help? Would you be willing to contact your school district and offer your services, such as watching children on the playground or reading to a group of them? Or just mentoring one or two children by spending time with them one on one to help them read or with their math?
I am sure every child needs a mentor. You don’t have to have any special skills to let others know you care. Last year several members of the business community, including the Daingerfield police, spent hours at the school mentoring students. That was not part of their job, but it is important to them to make a difference in the lives of children.
If you do not wish the direct contact with children, you can help in other ways. Our local Lions Clubs in Daingerfield and in Hughes Springs are begging for members. Lions Club members are contacted by the school when some child in school is in need of glasses. Lions Club members support the Texas Lions Camp for crippled children. Several of our area children have attended that camp with a qualification of diabetes. They have enjoyed that camp tremendously.
If you aren’t sure how to volunteer or what you can do, ask at the school administration buildings or local city halls. Someone will be willing to talk with you and discover what area you may be able to lend a hand to help your community.
After all, keep this in mind, we’re all in this together.
