Daingerfield man served in the 1950s, now serves veterans

When a Daingerfield man started college, he also started his military career in the Air Force. Jim Garner graduated from Texarkana, Ark. high school in 1952 and headed for college at North Texas State in Denton where he enrolled as a freshman. His military career began there in the Reserve Officer Training Corps.
Mr. Garner studied personnel production management while in college, working toward a double degree. 
“I went to school in the summer also so I went ahead of my degree plan by a number of hours,” he said. “I also worked for the fire department in Denton. There were six of us student firemen at three fire stations. They paid us $60 a month and gave us a room, so I was right on campus.
“In 1956 I went for a lieutenant commission, got married, and moved to Daingerfield to go to work for Lone Star Steel Company. I was the first person hired in the personnel department and worked from July of 1956 through December of 1956. I had a second lieutenant commission and was looking at three active years in the service.
