The Hughes Springs Mustangs football team was in action for the first time Friday morning as the team hosted the White Oak Roughnecks.
The Roughnecks enter the season picked No. 2 in District 9-2A Division I, behind Tatum.
The mustangs started things off on offense and things looked promising on the first play with a long run by juniorFred Hopkins.
The drive ended with the Mustangs punting to the Roughnecks, who proceeded to drive down the field and score a touchdown with a mix of effective short passes and run plays.
On the Mustangs next drive, Hopkins found the end zone on a 40 yard scamper. Despite the early touchdown by Hopkins, the Mustangs’ first team offense was stymied much of the morning by a stout defensive front from White Oak.  The offensive line for the mustangs returns only one starter, standout Kyre Lewis.  The line will have time to gel and should be formidable once the season starts against Clarksville on August 30 in Hughes Springs.
