Attitudes need to change was the message in a “State of the City from Police Eyes” report presented by Police Chief Larry Fleet at the Aug. 15 Lone Star City Council meeting. Chief Fleet drew applause when he urged the council to “do the right thing and get our town back to a productive community.”
“One thing I have been beating myself up about is attitudes,” he said. “I am saying we all need to have positive thoughts to make the city better. I am aware the drug problem will never go away, but we can keep it in check. I am not giving up. Drugs are a part of life now.”
Chief Fleet reported on information from the Uniform Crime Reporting System that shows the major crime rate from 2000 to 2012, such as murder, rape, robbery, burglary, thefts, and auto thefts. Records show crimes in these areas are declining.
“For example, in 2000, the total number of these major cases for Lone Star was 134; in 2006 the number was 82; and in 2012 it went down to 63,” Chief Fleet said. “Morris County had 137 major cases in 2000, with 104 in 2006 and 125 in 2012. Daingerfield had 153 in 2000, with 66 in 2006 and 103 in 2012. This represents a 53 percent reduction in these major areas for Lone Star.
