The Buzz: Praise for a hard worker
Honestly, the woman is a walking, talking encyclopedia of information as to things not only offered in our communities, but state-wide and nationally as well. A few years ago Martha Baker of Daingerfield began the Ounce of Prevention meetings, and the first one of the fall season kicked off Sept. 10, with a very large attendance.
The group had outgrown the rooms at the Daingerfield Volunteer Fire Department where they had been meeting, and they were graciously offered the use of the fellowship rooms at Church on the Rock in Daingerfield. It was nearly an overflow crowd at the first fall meeting, with Pastor Randy Seybert running to the storage closet and bringing out more tables and chairs.
If you haven’t heard of Ounce of Prevention, check it out. The meetings will be held on the second Tuesday of each month at Church on the Rock. Mrs. Baker works diligently throughout the month to secure speakers, and a lot of times two of them, to show up and inform people what their agency does.
There are so many resources available to help people in our area, and Mrs. Baker has made it her mission to find out who is at these agencies, what they do and what programs they offer. More importantly, she wants to know what they can do for her community.
I know people come from as far away as Greenville and Texarkana. Several travel from Longview or Tyler also for these meetings. These meetings are a valuable source of information for people working in the school systems, for churches, and for law enforcement agencies throughout the area. In the world we live in, things are complicated, and it is helpful when Mrs. Baker brings these people together to share what services they offer and how to obtain those services.
I honestly never knew there was a 2-1-1 service in the area at all, until I met Adam Teel at an Ounce of Prevention meeting. This service offers a lot of information for people seeking programs and help.
If you haven’t checked out an Ounce of Prevention meeting, plan to attend. The meetings are held at noon and a lot of us bring a sack lunch or pick up some food to eat while there. Mrs. Baker holds the time strictly to one hour, no more, no less.
It was with pride that I was able to attend the last Daingerfield Distinguished Alumni banquet and see Mrs. Baker as one of the distinguished alumni. That woman packs a full-blown resume of committees and boards she has been on, served on, started up and so on.
Our Daingerfield Health Fair is under her guidance and I personally know how hard she works to get so many vendors to attend and speakers also. She is always the best ever to provide me the needed information to get the story out to you, the readers.
I have just touched on a very little of what this woman does, and there is a whole lot more. She always has been active in music and other ministries in her church. With Martha Baker, the energy abounds and it is obvious to me and many others that her employer has always been that big guy in the sky. Thanks, Martha for all you do.
