It is no secret the Hughes Springs Lady Mustangs varsity volleyball team is having a banner season. They are currently 17-8 with an eight-game winning streak as they make their run for the playoffs. The big surprise of the season has been the addition of German exchange student, Katherina Deitrich, to the Lady Mustang’s standout roster.
Deitrich, from a small town in Southern Germany near Stuttgart, only arrived in the U.S. in early August. She spent one day sightseeing  in Washington D.C. before heading to her temporary home with a host family in Hughes Springs. She immediately went to work practicing with the team.
“We don’t play sports in school back home in Germany. We play, but in clubs outside of school. I was excited to play with the team and came early so I could work out with them in the summer,” Deitrich said.
That practice has certainly paid off. Deitrich is one of the top players on the team with 258 kills, 54 aces, and 16 blocks this season.
