Senior Mustang luncheon thrives

Hughes Springs Independent School District Superintendent Rick Ogden invites all senior citizens in the district to a free lunch at noon at the high school library on the third Thursday of each month. Contact Nita Clark at 903-639-3802 if you are interested in joining the Stangs Lunch Group.
I personally can attest to the great food that Kelly Whittington’s culinary class prepare for the group. It is fantastic.
Mr. Ogden kicked off the program with updates for this school year. The next meeting will be held Oct. 17, at which time business manager Derick Sibley will present the budget for the district. If you can attend, you can learn where your tax dollars are going and how the school is benefitting.
 Jessie Biles will bring students with patriotic music in November followed by Reggie Whatley with Christmas music in December.
A highlight of Roger Reece’s junior high woodworking class is the gifts they bring the seniors. Mr. Reece and his students will bring the results of woodworking projects to the seniors at the January meeting. There will be presentations by each of the students when they tell about the item they worked on and made in class. They could learn enough to start a small business some day. There is a shop in Hot Springs that sells many of those pens and other items the students are taught to make in class.
Teacher Jennifer Bean will bring the February program. She will talk about classroom technology.
The February meeting will be about robotics, taught by James Fitch.
Northeast Texas Community College President Dr. Brad Johnson will speak at the April meeting. Dr. Johnson will present information on the high school and junior college connection.
In May, high school counselor Misti Lake presents the top 10 percent of the graduates to the group.
I know that’s a whole lot of bragging on that Stangs Lunch Group, but it is well deserved. This is to give you an idea of what is coming and you can mark your calendars to show up at those luncheons. I have to say there is a steady group that has been coming since its start and they support the students wholeheartedly. I know many students really appreciate their senior citizens (many are grandparents) that come to the school and support them and listen to their projects.
Mark your calendars and get informed. Each month promises not only good speakers, but a really great lunch prepared by the culinary group.
