Hometown Person
Full name: Becky Woodard Edwards.
I have lived in: Fort Worth, Daingerfield, Naples, Texarkana and a few other places while I was in college.
Family: Son, Marc Starr; daughter, Kelly Starr Thompson; stepson- Tommy Edwards; husband, Harold Edwards (deceased).
Pets: Missy and Pepper, dogs; Nubbins and Scarlett, cats.
I love my pets and I have had a number of pets in my life.
Occupation: Math teacher in high school for 40 years mainly in Daingerfield and Pittsburg.
One of the best things about my job is: During my 32-year career at Daingerfield I taught mainly advanced math. I taught a number of excellent students that have become tremendous successes in life. To help these students succeed in life was not very difficult but I did enjoy every minute of it. However, the last five years at Pittsburg have been the most challenging and the most rewarding although I never thought that I would enjoy this kind of job. I have been teaching students that have been unsuccessful with passing the state math tests, some that have never passed these tests since third grade. To see their lack of self-esteem change to pride in themselves has to be the most rewarding part of my career.
My ideal vacation is: I love to travel to places that I haven’t seen. I really do like going on a cruise.
My hero is: Jesus Christ. Discovering Jesus and having a daily walk with Him has brought so much peace in my life.
My favorite TV show is: Dancing with the Stars.
My favorite healthy snack is: Fruit.
A cause I most believe in is: To lead others to accept Jesus Christ.
If I could change one thing about East Texas, it would be: I wish that we had more restaurants that have healthy options.
The persons who have influenced my life most are: Jesus Christ and my grandmother. They taught me some of the most important things in life. Although my grandmother passed away 35 years ago she continues to speak to me.
The scariest thing that ever happened to me was: Finding poisonous snakes when I lived alone.
If I had to do it all over again, I’d: Spend more time reading my Bible earlier in life.
The most exciting or dangerous thing I’ve ever done was: Dangerous- living alone in the country and playing football with the boys when I was a child and exciting- becoming a mother and grandmother.
If I won a trip to anywhere, I would go to: The Holy Lands.
I would have liked to participate in the historical events of: Walking on the moon and traveling in space.
Two words that describe me are: Determined and shy.
Included on my bucket list are: Vacations to New York, California, Hawaii, Alaska, Holland, and the Holy lands, as well as other places that I haven’t seen.
I wish I had the courage to: Travel alone.
