Hughes Springs’ newest accomplishment was premiered Oct. 7

Traffic had to be directed by police and volunteer firemen on Highway 11 in downtown Hughes Springs as hundreds showed for the premier opening of “The Legacy – An Event Center.” The premier event was held on Oct. 7 at 122 E. First St. The 1880’s Victorian style venue was sponsored by the Hughes Springs Economic Development Corporation.
The building underwent extensive renovation and construction the major part of this year. The original building was constructed in 1908, according to Hughes Springs City Secretary George Fite.
“It was first built by S.J. Eubanks,” Mr. Fite said. “A year after he built it, Jim Reeder bought into the business with him. Mr. Reeder was working for the Keaslers across the street and he wanted to invest, so Mr. Eubanks allowed him to invest in that kind of business that was all general mercantile.  Ed Watson invested also. It was Eubanks and Reeder, then Mr. Watson bought out the Eubanks and it was Reeder-Watson. After that, Betsy Schindler’s father, Charles Davis, came in the picture, so it was Reeder-Watson-Davis. After they got out of the general mercantile business, they stayed strictly with the funeral home business, which was Reeder-Davis Funeral Home, then Reeder-Davis-Schindler Funeral Home.
