Talk about landscaping with native plants is planned
Dallas-area landscape architect Carol Feldman will be in Mount Pleasant on Oct. 26 to give a free talk about how to create an attractive landscape with native plants.
The Lake Country Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas will host Ms. Feldman as part of its upcoming Texas Native Plant Week celebration.
Ms. Feldman’s presentation, “Landscaping with Natives,” will begin at 6 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Titus County AgriLife Extension Center at 1708 Industrial Road. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for registration, which is free.
The event will include door prizes, refreshments and displays about native plants.
Native plants in the home landscape save water, require less maintenance and limit the need for herbicides, pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Hardier and more disease-resistant than imported or exotic species, natives also provide much-needed habitat for such wildlife as butterflies and birds.
With more than 5,000 species of plants native to Texas, variety is never-ending. And with its abundant rainfall, acid soils and relatively temperate climate, East Texas is home to more than 2,500 species of natives.
Ms. Feldman is a veteran landscape architect whose Richardson-based practice is focused on water-conserving, sustainable landscapes.
She said the key to designing with native plants is to know native plants.
For instance, she said, gardeners need to know how native plants grow in a backyard landscape as opposed to their natural habitat.
