In the president’s report to the board of trustees at the Oct. 22 meeting of the Northeast Texas Community College, Dr. Brad Johnson reported this year’s festivities for the Scare Affair had the best turn out in years.
“The event raised more than $9,000,” Dr. Johnson said. “The money makes it good for many of our student organizations during the year. This was a 25 percent rise from previous years.
“In the recent rodeo, which is different than other sports, the ladies finished third overall and the men finished fourth overall.
“Our strategic plan calls for a robust program. We have a surprising number of international students with us this fall. They are from Venezuela, Jamaica, London, Brazil, Amsterdam and the Dominican Republic.”
Dr. Johnson said House Bill 5 brought major changes in the way public education is structured.
“That legislature talked about community colleges,” Dr. Johnson said. “It appears we will be more involved in public education than we have been in the past. HB 5 has every student to be on a career path. This also dramatically raises the stakes for competition. I am not at all surprised to see a number of folks looking at this issue. We are going to have to become the provider of preference for these districts.
