Pearl Westene Hinton, better known as “Polly” died on Oct. 22, at her home in Avinger. Her valiant fight with ALS (Lou Gehrigs disease), was done and she departed for her heavenly home surrounded by the loving care of her husband, Coy, her family and friends. Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God, and the love and prayers of family, friends, and many supporters carried her through the long struggle with her typical grace and joy.
Mrs. Hinton was born on July 25, 1934, in Charlotte, to Earl W. and Sylvia Blalock Abernathy. Known for her kind heart, beautiful smile, and devout faith, she and Coy shared over 60 years of marriage and raised three loving daughters, Norma, Cindy, and Ramona. Throughout her life she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many. Her gift of a peaceful disposition, shown through her constant smile, will never be forgotten.
Polly and Coy met in her hometown of San Antonio and the couple was married on Dec. 20, 1952. They raised their three children in the Dallas area. Polly worked for over 30 years as an office manager of an insurance agency. Possessing a true servant’s heart, she faithfully cared for family and friends while working and volunteering for her church. She shaped their spirituality by her tireless Christian example. A faithful wife, Mrs. Hinton loved to write poetry, read, pray, and play games/cards – especially with her grandchildren.
After the couple’s retirement in 1996, they built a house in the Avinger area. She loved to garden, go for walks and simply enjoy the lovely surroundings of nature. She particularly loved her church family at Daingerfield Church of Christ.
Her surviving family members are numerous, but mainly include; her husband of 60 years, Coy Hinton; three daughters and their partners, Norma and Charlie Brock, Cynthia and Martin Peterson, and Ramona Dowdy and Darrell Dick, Ramona preceded her mother in death; eight grandchildren, Steve Trimble, Stacy Keough, Scott Trimble, Jeff Turley, Julie Conklin, Alicia Thompson, Candace Retmier, and Tobe Williams; 13 beloved great-grandchildren; father, Earl W. Abernathy; and mother, Sylvia Abernathy (deceased ); two sisters, Dorothy Odle and Delores Frankford; and too many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews to even list or count.
The funeral service was held Oct. 24, at Daingerfield Church of Christ. Burial was at Woodlawn Memorial Park, under the direction of Reeder-Davis Funeral Home, in Hughes Springs.
Pallbearers include members of her church family, with her grandsons Steve, Scott, Jeff, and Tobe as honorary pallbearers.
Memorial donations can be made to: Muscular Dystrophy Association, P.O. Box 78960, Phoenix, AZ 85062-8960, or to Hearts Way Hospice, P. O. Box 5608, Longview, TX 75608.
Yet, beyond financial donations, Polly always lived by the Golden Rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated. i.e. Do a loving act of kindness, make someone laugh, send a card, give a hug, or say “I love you” to your special friend in her memory.
The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support in many heart-felt forms from too many people to name individually, but including: Hospice – the amazing Hearts Way team, family and friends – either through prayer and/or visits, neighbors, and even random acts of kindness through total “strangers.”
