The Voice of Democracy Scholarship contest is for high-school aged entrants and the Patriot’s Pen Scholarship contest is for junior high aged entrants.  These essay-based contests are open to home-schooled participants as well.  Last year’s Texas State VOD Winner was a home-schooled female from Farmersville. For this state- level win, she was given a $10,000 scholarship.
VFW Post 1890 Vietnam Veteran Les Houk and spouse, Anne Houk, Ladies Auxiliary District 12 President, took VOD and Patriot’s Pen posters and pamphlets to the Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District campuses and to Pewitt ISD Schools on Oct. 8.  The deadline to get these back to the Post for judging is Nov. 1.  The Post is hoping for a good response from each of the school districts.
This year’s theme for Voice of Democracy is “Why I’m Optimistic about Our Nation’s Future.”  For the VOD contest, the entrants write the essay then record their essay on a CD (making sure it will play on all players).
