Lady Mustangs fall in playoff opener

The Lady Mustang volleyball season came to a close with a playoff loss in Mount Pleasant Tuesday as Hughes Springs fell to Paris Chisum an exciting matchup, 25-19, 13-25, 14-25, 25-22 and 13-15.
Hughes Springs came into the game as the No. 2 seed from district 16-2A while Chisum finished third in district 15-2A.
The Lady Mustangs got off to a good start to the game, winning the opening set 25-19. Breanne Gunn recorded four of her team-leading 16 kills in the opening set while Ashlin Roach recorded all three of her aces in the set. Hughes Springs jumped out to an 8-3 lead before Chisum came back to cut the lead to 12-11. Hughes Springs led 16-14 before using a 6-1 run to push the lead to 22-15 en route to the win.
Hughes Springs had another fast start in the second set, jumping out to a quick 5-1 lead. Chisum later used an 8-1 run to grab a 9-6 lead on a kill by Raegan Fields. Hughes Springs came back to the cut the lead to 11-9 but Chisum answered with 14 of the game’s next 17 points to earn a 25-13 win.
With the game tied at one set each, the teams traded points in the opening moments of the third set as Gunn led the Hughes Springs attack. Chisum led 16-11 before kills by Dietrich, Roach and Gunn cut the lead to 16-14. Chisum had an answer, though, as the Paris team used a 9-0 run to take the third set and a 2-1 advantage.
