Mustangs crush Frankston in playoff opener

The opening round of the 2013 Class 2A Division II playoffs got underway last Friday night for the Hughes Springs Mustangs in Longview as the Mustangs picked up a 46-20 win over the Frankston Indians.
The Mustang faithful filled the new Pine Tree Stadium in Longview, and were not disappointed.  The Mustangs were a bit slow out of the gate though, with a first quarter that yielded not many highlights other than a spectacular blocked punt by Jonathan Dufner.  
That blocked punt set the Mustangs up deep in Indian territory but did not translate into any points as the offense stalled.  
After the first quarter, the Mustang offense set the tone with Fred Hopkins Jr. leading the way The Mustangs topped 500 yards on the ground for the night, with three rushers going over the century mark.  
Kane Sampson rushed for 106 yards on five carries and a a touchdown, while Michael Martinez contributed 160 yards on 16 carries, adding a pair of touchdowns and five 2pt. conversions.  He also was 4-13 passing on the night for 46 yards and one interception.  
Fred Hopkins was the leading rusher on the night with 163 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns.  Chris Royal also got in the mix also with 11 carries for 78 yards.
