This song is played over and over in December, ‘it’s the most wonderful time of the year,’ and most of us can truly agree it is a fantastic time of the year. Most people are happy and in good spirit this time of year as they do the Christmas shopping and decorating. Driving home tonight after the wonderful time of the year Christmas parade in Daingerfield, I noticed more decorations are out at houses.
I love decorations. I would have them all over the house and also on the roof, but since I am a bit afraid of heights, I don’t think that will happen anytime soon.
A nice evening in December can be spent loading the family in a vehicle and driving around looking at the light displays. Friends of mine in Daingerfield and I used to look forward to our treks around the area and in other towns nearby. We had routes we would follow. We’ve seen deer all over the place in yards and even a Santa in a boat. I love the chasing lights; they bring out the sparkle of the holidays.
It is so much fun to see people getting ready for a parade at Christmas. You can just tell some have put many man hours in the project and a whole lot of thinking to come up with some of the various floats. The different ideas come out in the floats and other vehicles, which makes a parade fun for all ages. Some floats and people were new to me this year in the Daingerfield parade. Some were not, but their float ideas were different. I was surprised to see that nice, huge float with Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus from Omaha. What a nice gesture to come down and be a part of our parade.
This is a time to remember the less fortunate of the area. Check out the angel trees if your city has one. Other organizations in cities are having toy and food drives you can participate in and share some of the good spirit.
This is a time for going out of our way to do something special for someone, maybe someone that you know has experienced a loss and needs a word of cheer. Maybe you have a neighbor who is elderly and could use a hand. Maybe they are someone’s leaves that need raked and bagged. Maybe you could offer to make a trip to the store to pick up something for someone. Maybe someone just needs an ear to listen to them for awhile.
There are many ways we can spread Christmas cheer. The lights, friendships, decorations, helping hands, and donations are just a few of the many things we can do to celebrate the holiday season.
Remember Christmas is really a big birthday party and Jesus is the reason for the season, any season.
