Lady Tigers down Paul Pewitt, Avinger wins two

Area basketball teams saw a lot of action this week as the season moved into the district part of the schedule for several squads.
The second quarter was the difference for the Daingerfield Lady Tigers Tuesday as they used a strong eight minute stretch to help earn a 35-25 victory over visiting district opponent Paul Pewitt. The Lady Tigers and Lady Brahmas were tied at seven after one quarter of play before Daingerfield won the second-quarter battle 11-1 to build an 18-8 halftime lead. The teams battled to a draw in the second half as the 10 points was the difference in the win.
Janzelle Smith led the way for the Lady Tigers in the win with eight points, 14 rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot while Deandra Hanson added eight points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Kiana Hanson had seven points and seven rebounds, Kiyuna Williams added five points and seven rebounds, Iyona Parker had 13 rebounds and two points, Denver Mims scored two and added three rebounds, Gloria Rodriguez had two points, six rebounds, two blocks and two steals and MeMe Black added one point and seven rebounds.
The Hughes Springs Mustangs fell short on the road Tuesday as the were defeated by Jefferson, 62-48. Hayden Smith scored 25 points to lead Hughes Springs in the loss.
The Lady Mustangs also fell short on the road Tuesday as they fell to the Lady Lions in New Boston, 50-41.
Hughes Springs led by as many as 11 in the opening quarter but could not hold on as New Boston came back to get the win.
K.J. Murphy had 11 points, six rebounds and six steals for the Lady Mustangs in the loss while Courtney Higgins added eight points and six rebounds. Dashe Hatten scored six points and added five rebounds, Breanne Gunn had four points and 10 rebounds and Becca Crossland added five boards.
