The day started chilly but warmed up in time for the First Day Hike held at the Daingerfield State Park on Jan. 1. Onlie Mcgee, Ranger III and interpreter, said more than 60 people showed up for the hike.
“It was great,” she said. “The weather turned out great; it was in the 60s and the sun was shining.
“They had the First Day Hike last year but it wasn’t advertised a lot and it wasn’t that well attended. All the state parks in Texas had the hike, including Bob Sandlin State Park and Tyler State Park. Tyler had about the same number we did and Bob Sandlin had 14 people.”
“We plan to hike every Saturday at the park during January. The hikes begin at 2 p.m.”
Ranger Mcgee said she was surprised so many people showed up for the hike.
“I was surprised so many people showed up, and I was really excited,” she said. “I was hoping it would be a good turnout, but knew it was a holiday and some people still had to go to work. People attending said it was great. A couple of days prior to the hike we blew the trails out and cleaned the roots out so no one would trip. People liked the trail and they said the park was beautiful. Some people actually said they live in Daingerfield and hadn’t been to the park. They said they plan to come back.
