The Buzz
Our walk in the park
By Marlene Bohr
It really was a fun afternoon and informative to boot when I decided to take Sibby, my rat terrier, and go to the ranger-led hike at Daingerfield State Park. I had missed the first day-of-the-year hike, so thought it would be great if we would go on the first Saturday hike during January. Ranger Onlie Mcgee decided since the first day hike was so great and so many attended, she would lead a hike every Saturday during January. Note: There are two Saturdays left if you haven’t had a chance to join in the fun.
Saturday was a windy day, but the trees blocked the wind so it was really very comfortable walking the trail. We were shown a waterfall and where a bridge was knocked down and another was rebuilt. I had heard about the fire pit that was built back in the Civilian Conservation Corp days when the park was taking formation to become a start of what it is today. We walked by it, and it really is bigger than I had imagined. It is made of very sturdy stones.
We were able to see, with the help of Ranger Mcgee, where beavers are working in the creeks and streams in the park. She also showed us a huge beaver hut not far from the outdoor theater. The trails still had a lot of roots in them, so you had to watch where you stepped. It was a cool day and a great day for walking.
