Volunteers wanted and needed
Many counties have positions open and people signed up for a March 4 primary election this year. Positions for trustees on school boards, some city mayors, and several city council seats will also be open. Prepare yourself to keep informed as the ads appear and the signs fly up along the roadways and in lawns.
It seems the human race is always looking for a change. A county forum will be held at the Morris County Courthouse Annex on Feb. 11. I always look forward to those forums as it is a time for the people to meet the candidates and listen to what they have to say. Also, questions can be asked of the candidates. I like the way they are submitted and reviewed so no one has to be picked on unfairly. Some incumbents are great in their positions, as are people who are running against them, but a lot of us aren’t too comfortable talking to a crowd like the forum presents. I have to admire those people who say what they stand for and answer the questions presented to them, even though public speaking isn’t their forte.
I also am grateful for the work the Business & Professional Women’s Club in Daingerfield puts toward hosting this forum. They will be assisted by the Daingerfield Chamber of Commerce.
Maybe we see something in our schools or cities that we don’t like and think a new person in the position will change things.
I wonder if we need a political forum for cities and schools, like we do for the county elections? This spring may be the perfect time to educate ourselves on exactly what is involved in operating our cities and schools. What are the problems these elected officials face, and are we aware of all the changes coming from the legislature that they have to abide by, often times without sufficient funding?
It is a big undertaking that involves a lot of time serving on city councils or school boards. People need to think about their choices. Candidates can, and I am sure they will, try to get out and meet as many people as possible before the election. Voters should not be remiss in the process. Show up at your local city or school meetings and learn how your town or school is operated.
Always keep in mind, positions for school trustees, city councilmen, and mayors are filled by those people elected who want to get involved. They volunteer hundreds of hours to the communities, without pay by the way.
The deadline to sign up for a place on a school board or city council is Feb. 28. If you want to make a difference and are willing to devote countless hours, put your hat in the ring and run. We can all make a change. Let’s make sure our changes lead to better education and better cities.
