The Buzz Maybe it is time to throw in the towel

Many of you that supported us through the many years of our fish fry at the park will not see your local Hughes Springs Lions Club this year during Wildflower Trails.
The cost has gone up and the Lions Club cannot offer it to the public and make any money from the fund-raiser we have been holding yearly for many, many years.
We are still meeting weekly most of the time and a recent plea to others to join our club so we can continue to do the work that we do, has for the most part, went unheeded with the exception of one gentleman that has joined us and has become a really faithful member. All of us really appreciate his time and effort.
In case you don’t know what Lions do, our motto is ‘we serve.’ The fund-raisers that we hold with our fish fry at Wildflower Trails and the chili supper at the Homecoming game in Hughes Springs, for the most part, is what pays for our help with glasses and eye exams for children at the school. When school nurse Maudie Peters lets the club know of a need, we step up to the plate and see that child’s eyes are examined and glasses are provided, if needed.
Our Lions Club also supports the Texas Lions Camp for crippled children in Kerrville. Many area children, in the past, have taken advantage of this and have attended the camp.
Our Lions Club also gives money for scholarships each spring to help students in their advanced studies.
The Hughes Springs Lions Club will celebrate its 70th anniversary in July.  It was with a bit of sadness, we pondered if we should continue with about a half a dozen regular members showing up for meetings.
Club President Rick Ogden said it is a different breed of people out there now than when the Lions Clubs were originally formed. I guess that is true, but really how sad is this?
