Raleigh Jones
Jones Services for Raleigh Jones, 96 of Baytown, will be held Saturday, March 8, at 2 p.m. at the Daingerfield Church of Christ in Daingerfield. Raleigh (know as Slick to most) was born Sept. 25, 1917, in Bloomberg, to Charles Chester Jones and Drusilla Lummus Jones. He grew up in Bloomberg where he was a star basketball player. As a teenager he joined to Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and was stationed in Daingerfield, where he met the love of his life, Ollie Mae Walker. Slick and Ollie eloped to Galveston, to be married and lived a life full of love and joy for 75 years. They were blessed with one son, David Jones. Raleigh owned the Nic & Dime Diner in Houston, until Uncle Sam called him to serve his country in the US Army during World War II. After the war he worked for Brown & Root Construction and later Texas Eastern Gas Pipeline where he enjoyed a 33-year career. After retirement he served his church happily working in their food pantry in Baytown and taking awesome care of his wife Ollie. Mr. Jones is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Drusilla Jones, his step-mother Ruth Jones, sisters Scharlene Brawner, Francis Irving, and Dorothy Parnell, and his brothers Joffre Jones, Travis Jones, and Billy Jones. He is survived by his wife, Ollie Mae Jones of Baytown; son David Jones and his wife, Susan Jones of Richmond; and grandchildren, Kayla Jones of Richmond and Derek Jones of Los Angeles, Calif. Serving as pall bearers are his nephews, Tony Helms, Rocky Thomasson, Reggie Walker, Marshall Jones, Charles Parnell and Brent Parnell. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations may be made in his honor to Westbury Christian School at 10420 Hillcroft, Houston, TX 77096.
