Hughes Springs’ second graders in Jennifer Bean’s class were anxious to tell the story about their project of putting eggs in an incubator, watching them hatch and caring for them after they were hatched. The hands-on experience was done in their classroom.
“We started on Feb. 11 and estimated the eggs to arrive on March 4,” Ms. Bean said. “I’ve been working closely with John L. Ferguson who is with the Cass County 4-H Club. He has provided all the materials we needed.  Our first chick that hatched was on March 5 during the Pledge of Allegiance. We named her Miss America.”
The chicks were anxious to make an appearance as by March 6, 11 of the 16 eggs had hatched.
The eggs were furnished to the class by Bobby and Linda McDaniel, according to Ms. Bean.
“The eggs were put in an incubator,” Ms. Bean said. “We had to make sure the temperature stayed between 99.4 and 99.6 degrees and the humidity had to be between 40 and 50 percent. We had to keep a certain amount of water in the incubator.
