Joe and Marie Skipper of Daingerfield celebrated 59 years of marriage by embarking in a cruise aboard the Caribbean Princess at a Houston port.
“We were scheduled to leave on a Saturday and during our lifeboat drill, they announced that we would not be going anywhere,” Mr. Skipper said. “We were informed there was an oil spill. A barge and a ship had collided and oil had spilled out. We were already on the ship and in our room.
“All the food service, room service and entertainment went right on, but it was all dockside as the ship did not leave port.”
Mr. Skipper said they announced every day that we would leave in another day.
“They announced they did not know when we would get to leave and every day they said it would be another day,” Mr. Skipper said. “If people wanted to disembark in Houston, they would let them off to shop and they could come back.
“We decided to stay on the ship. It finally left on the following Tuesday. It made one fast trip to Cozumel, Mexico and arrived there on Thursday morning. We left Thursday night about 5 and headed back to Houston.”
