Waiving jury sentencing, Jason Wayne Belcher, 35, was sentenced by 115th District Court Judge Lauren Parish to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of aggravated sexual assault of a 6-year-old child. The jury verdict was read on April 23 and Mr. Belcher was sentenced on April 24. He will not be eligible for parole for at least 30 years.

“Today the same jury heard evidence during the punishment phase that the defendant had previously been convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child in Dallas County in 1999 and burglary of a habitation in Wood County in the early part of 2000,” said Upshur County Criminal District Attorney Billy Byrd. “In addition, the jury heard evidence from another child that in February of 2014, she made an outcry to a teacher at a local school district that this defendant had been raping her for several years. The jury heard evidence surrounding that investigation that is ongoing in Wood County.

“The sexual abuse to the child in Upshur County occurred while the child’s mother was at work. The abuse occurred at a home located in Upshur County and the crime occurred in January of 2012.”
