Daingerfield High School Math Team won the Calculator applications contest at the University Interscholastic League Region 2A Championship at Tyler Junior College on May 3. Cassidy Shaver led the team by winning first with a score of 252. Madison Cross of Ore City took second with a 239, and Daingerfield’s Sam Fowler was a point behind for third. Karter Ford took fourth for Daingerfield with a 226. Cross Allen rounded up the Daingerfield scores with a 182 for ninth place. The team beat second place Ore City by 58 points, or nine correct questions.

As a result the local Math Team will head to Austin for the State UIL Academic contest later in May. The Daingerfield team also took second in Number Sense and Mathematics to Paris Chisum in Number Sense and Queen City in Mathematics. Daingerfield’s Number Sense score was four questions behind Paris Chisum and good enough for Daingerfield to advance to Austin as the ‘Wild Card’ team, which is the best second place team of the four state regions.

Individually Cassidy Shaver took second in Number Sense three questions behind Regional Champion Jay Patel from Queen City. Sam Fowler took sixth place. In the Mathematics contest Cassidy Shaver finished first, two questions ahead of Patel. As a result Cassidy will be advancing to Austin as an individual in this event. Sam finished in fifth place.
