The second reading of an ordinance change regarding fireworks in the city of Lone Star was read and approved at the May 15 city council meeting.

For the three holidays, July 4, Christmas and New Year’s Eve, individuals above the age of 18 may possess, ignite and demonstrate fireworks for a period lasting from the date of the holiday to one day after the stated holiday. Individuals under the age of 12 may not possess, ignite or demonstrate any fireworks. Individuals above 12 and below 18 years of age may only possess, ignite or demonstrate fireworks in the presence of an adult who is responsible for the individual.

“We are still working to have a city-wide fireworks demonstration,” Mayor Karl Stoermer said.

On June 19 the council will review bids on the project on Byrne Street. The work should start this summer, according to Mayor Stoermer.

In other business, the council approved budget meetings for Aug. 7 at 11 a.m. and Aug. 14 at 6 p.m. The public hearing will be held Aug. 21 at 5:30 p.m.

No action was taken on the Drought Contingency Plan.

“It is a little on the old side as it was last done in 2000,” Mayor Stoermer said. “If we have a drought here, it will be worse in other areas of the state. The city employees and I will look at the plan.”

Mayor Stoermer congratulated the incumbent council members who retained their seats in the election.
