Do we need another Pearl Harbor?

The Buzz By Marlene Bohr

When I leave the annual Memorial Day program held yearly by the men of the Arden Hanes American Legion Post 351 in Hughes Springs, I am always grateful to these men for spending their holiday honoring our military men and women. Each year as I leave the park, I am saddened by the lack of attendance at this simple, but so meaningful, ceremony that honors those who gave the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy the many freedoms we have.

The year 2014 finds my feelings a little different. I am sad, sure, but also very angry and very afraid for this country. The majority of the people have clearly spoken and let the military people know that they no longer care, if they ever did. The lack of participation was glaring compared to other events held at that park.

The lack of respect for our veterans is appalling. Daily on the news we hear how they are not being cared for properly after their service to this great country. The list goes on and on. Back to the Memorial Day service. It amazes me that only one month ago at Spring Park in Hughes Springs it was so crowded with people that you couldn’t walk far without bumping into someone else. Many hundreds of people were packed into that small area of the city.

Today it looked exactly like a ghost town except for the few who gathered with the men of the American Legion to pay their respects to the fallen soldiers from the many wars this country has been involved in. What is the real important thing in our life today: carnival rides, corn dogs, games and the festival activity? If it wasn’t for our military people, Wildflower Trails in East Texas would not be happening. It is a wonderful time to drive the roads and see the wildflowers. Many people come back to their hometown to visit with others. Many class reunions are held.
