The 2014 season of Hughes Springs baseball came to an end May 23. The game, although it did not end the way we would have liked, was a great game and showed what great heart and character that the young men of Hughes Springs have.

With the home team losing 5-3 going into the bottom half of the 7th inning, the Mustangs were able to claw and fight and come within 90 feet of tying the game and 180 feetof winning it. With the bases loaded, two different times, the Mustangs were able to plate only one run in the inning and the season ended on a fly out to center.

The Sunnyvale Raiders were first to bat in the game and went down in order, as did the Mustangs in the first inning. But the Mustangs were the first to score and held the lead until a 3-run homer put the Raiders up for good. Dylan Moore ended the season with his first loss in over two years, dating back to his sophomore year. Over that span, he proved to be a feared and highly respected pitcher. Along with Chad McKinney his battery mate, who in his own right was just as feared, either at the plate or behind it, between the two in the last two years, they were part of teams that lost only a handful of times, and that is pretty impressive.

For all the seniors this was their last game as a Mustang, but they can hold their heads high, knowing that they continually play the game with passion and class. This senior class was led by Dylan Moore and Chad McKinney, both of whom are already lined up to play baseball at the next level. With other seniors, Jacob Taylor, Hayden Smith and Dillon Dewiit leading the way either on the field or the class room, Hughes Springs should always be proud of the boys that are becoming men right in front of our eyes.
