Make summer a safe time for yourself and kids

School is out, and it’s time to take the kids to the parks in the area. Swimming is a big deal at Daingerfield State Park, in addition to their boat rides on the lake. They have a great hiking trail for the adventurous or those wanting to keep that physical exercise going.
Avinger, Daingerfield, Hughes Springs and Lone Star all have parks. I often see families taking advantage of the playground equipment in Daingerfield when I go to the post office, and have seen the one at Spring Park utilized also. Hughes Springs is lucky to have two parks. Spring Creek Park near the city hall offices sports a paved walkway with wonderful scenery to enjoy as you travel along.
Movies in the Park break out in summertime at Spring Creek Park in Hughes Springs. Watch the sign across from city hall and happenings in The Steel Country Bee for the updates on the movies. When summer comes, the Morris Twin-Cinema changes its hours to an earlier time and two shows per night. I love those summer hours. It helps to be able to get to a movie earlier and have plenty of time to wind down before bedtime.
Whatever your plans are for local outdoor activities, don’t forget the sunscreen. I read recently where anyone and everyone over the age of six months should put on sunscreen. Read the labels to see what is the best protection factor indicated for you and your children. Don’t be skimpy with the sunscreen; more is always better. If you have old sunscreen from last year, authorities say it isn’t as effective and you probably should throw it away.
Another article I read said to wear sunscreen year round as there are UVA rays that are out in the winter months also.
Another reminder in this hotter weather is to be more careful of pets and children. Never, ever leave them in hot cars. Too many little ones have lost their lives when they are left in vehicles. It was not the intention of their parents, but failure of someone to remember they carried precious cargo. Make a practice always to check the back seat of your car to see if there is anyone there. That can apply for grandparents also who sometimes have those little ones with them.
Drivers, be careful of kids playing near the streets; sometimes they are excited about a game of football and they may drift into the street chasing the ball. When in residential areas, watch out for these kids.
Have a safe and happy summer everyone.
