An increase in cafeteria rates was approved by the Hughes Springs Independent School Board at its June 9 meeting. The cost for breakfast will be $2 and the cost for lunch will be $2.75. The adult lunches will remain the same at $3.25.
Superintendent Rick Ogden said food prices are skyrocketing.
“Lunch prices are climbing due to the federal guidelines also, such as two fruits instead of one at a meal,” Mr. Ogden said. “Because of the federal guidelines, the need has dropped off because of what they serve. She has had some food testing at the junior high and the high school to see what the kids really like.”
Principal Brian Nation said he thought the quality of the food was much better than it has been.
Three board members were given oaths of office for another term. They were Billy Willis, Rick Nelson and Clint Morgan. In board reorganization, the board chose to leave officers the same as last year. The officers are John Willis, president; Bill Lindsey, vice president; and Rick Nelson, secretary.
After a lengthy executive session, the board approved principal Michael Walker’s contract to expire on Aug. 31. Stipends and administrative salaries were approved. New hires included Scott Hanes as the elementary principal and Heather Mc- Gregor as the high school principal.
In the superintendent’s report, Mr. Ogden reported 1,198 students enrolled at the close of the school year. Stephanie Ferris was hired as a junior high math teacher.
“Our STARR scores overall are pretty good,” Mr. Ogden said. “There are some areas we need to work on. There are two areas we were two points below the state average.”
