Finishing touches are all that is needed to complete work done under a $5.4 million bond for the Daingerfield-Lone Star Independent School District, according to Superintendent Sandra Quarles. The update was given to the board of trustees at their June 16 meeting.

“The screen that is to cover the air conditioning units is to be completed soon and the landscaping is ongoing,” Mrs. Quarles said. “Duct work in the auditorium is still not complete. There are a couple issues they are dealing with, but that will be finished soon.”

The construction was covered under a $5.4 million bond, a Qualified School Construction Bond that voters approved at the polls.

Winn Tile Company received the flooring bid for work at the West Elementary School and the high school. Transportation and maintenance director James Long included the work in his report.

“The biggest job we have right now is removing all the furniture and desks and all out of rooms at West Elementary to redo the floors,” Mr. Long said. “This involves approximately 30 rooms and includes close to 30,000 square feet. We are removing the carpet and prepping the floors in preparation for the new tile floors.”

Mr. Long touched on transportation and other maintenance work planned this summer.

“We are doing preventive maintenance on the buses,” Mr. Long said. “We do have a couple that are having issues with the air conditioners, which is not uncommon for buses that ride the old rough roads that we have. I have one that has a power steering problem that we will have to repair, but other than that, it is just routine, making sure lights are working, stop arms and cleaning them up for the summer.

“We have a couple air conditioning units we need to change out. One is in the administration building. When they finish cheerleading, basketball and so on, we will redo the gym floors. We will finish out work in the high school, such as the vinyl flooring in the halls. There are five halls that haven’t been done and we will complete those this summer.”
