Plans underway to resurface selected city streets

The street project began last year will continue this year on some of the city streets in Daingerfield. The Daingerfield City Council met June 17 and approved street sealcoating, reconditioning and asphalt overlay.
On Colquitt Street between Jefferson and Highway 11/49 and on State Street between Highway 11/49 and the three-way intersection they will be doing sealcoating instead of asphalt. Nichols Street and Frazier Street from Taylor Street to Scurry Street except behind Topps, will be done with asphalt overlay. Other streets included in the reconditioning are Irvin Street, West Ewan Street, the south end of Wildwood, Walker Street and S. Willis Street.
City Manager Carl Teel said based on the current prices that have been bid for this year’s road work, only a few streets will be done this summer.
“We can only do a few streets due to the high cost of asphalt and related materials,” Mr. Teel said. “Road work is expensive and forces us to work in segments in order to formulate a long term plan to slowly and incrementally improve our streets.”
The council approved awarding South Texas Illumination LLC the bid for the downtown enhancement project in the amount of $557,841.57.
“There were four contractors who bid on the project and the lowest bidder is being vetted to verify the numbers and qualifications of the company,” Mr. Teel said. “Once everything is checked, you will be presented with the recommendation by Freese and Nichols Inc., as to the qualified lowest bidder for action by the city council for approval and recommendation to the Texas Department of Transportation. In turn, TxDOT will review everything and once they concur with the recommendation, the city can take the last and final step of awarding the contract to the selected and approved contractor. Actual construction will start soon after the award is made and should take several months to complete the entire project.” The council also approved the amendment to the contract for Freese and Nichols to do inspection and project services for the downtown enhancement program.
Mr. Teel said work is slow on the animal shelter.
